Easy Games to Play With Kids While You’re Waiting

(No materials needed — just play!)

Waiting happens a lot when you’re raising kids — waiting in lines, waiting for dinner to bake, waiting for siblings to finish an activity, waiting in the car. These little pockets of downtime can feel stressful… but they can also become meaningful play moments.

As an educator, I like to think of waiting time as a built-in opportunity for connection, language development, early learning, and imagination. Here are simple, screen-free games that turn ordinary moments into playful learning.

1. Sound Detective

Ask your child: “What sounds can you hear right now?”
They might notice the hum of the fridge, cars outside, footsteps, a ticking clock, or even their own breathing.

Learning boost: Listening skills, language development, sensory awareness
Perfect for: Waiting rooms, grocery lines, pre-bedtime

2. I Spy… With a Twist

Choose a color, shape, or beginning sound.
“I spy something blue…”
“I spy something that starts with /b/…”
“I spy something round…”

Learning boost: Vocabulary, phonemic awareness, visual discrimination
Perfect for: Restaurants, car rides, standing in line

3. Emotions Charades

Take turns acting out a feeling — happy, tired, frustrated, excited, surprised — and guess the emotion.

Learning boost: Emotional literacy, empathy, social skills
Perfect for: Transitions, before leaving the house, calming anxious moments

4. Tell Me a Story

Start a story, then let your child add the next part. Keep going back and forth.

“Once there was a tiny snowman who lived in a freezer…”

Learning boost: Creativity, sequencing, rich vocabulary
Perfect for: Waiting for dinner, preschool pickup, quiet mornings

5. Finger Play Favorites

Play classics like:

  • Itsy Bitsy Spider

  • Open, Shut Them

Learning boost: Fine motor control, rhythm, memory
Perfect for: Little kids, toddlers, car seat moments

6. Would You Rather? — Kid Edition

Keep it silly and simple!
“Would you rather slide down a rainbow or swim in a pool of marshmallows?”
“Would you rather be a penguin or a polar bear?”

Learning boost: Decision-making, reasoning, communication
Perfect for: Walking to school, waiting for food, long lines

7. Move Like…

Ask your child to move like an animal:
“Can you stomp like an elephant?”
“Tiptoe like a fox?”
“Waddle like a penguin?”

Learning boost: Gross motor skills, self-regulation
Perfect for: Long hallways, outdoor waiting, energy resets

8. Count the… Game

Count how many:

  • red cars pass by

  • square tiles are on the floor

  • people wearing hats you see

Learning boost: Early math, counting, comparison
Perfect for: Parking lots, waiting rooms, restaurants

9. Air Drawing

Draw a shape, letter, or animal in the air with your finger.
Your child guesses what it is — then takes a turn.

Learning boost: Early literacy, shape recognition, creativity
Perfect for: Anywhere you’re standing still

10. What’s Missing?

If you're at home or near a table: place 3–5 small objects out (spoon, toy car, sock, crayon).
Let your child look, then close their eyes while you remove one item.

Learning boost: Memory, attention, language
Perfect for: Kitchen waiting time, morning routines
